Soft drinks or colas can be very damaging to the bodily functions of people who are dealing with diabetes and hyperglycemia. Because of the nature of their illnesses, these people cannot easily be able to consume high sugar drinks like most other people, for fear of altering their insulin levels.

Soft drinks or colas are the number one drink to actually avoid as much as you can if you are diagnosed with diabetes. These drinks contain very high amounts of sugar, and should actually not be taken at all if you are at a higher level of diabetes. The manufacturing of soft drinks includes high amounts of sugar, which is primarily what gives it a lot of flavor. The high amounts of sugar also cause the “sugar high” experience to some, which makes certain individuals use it as a substitute for coffee during their working hours. Studies have also shown that soft drinks have been seen as a source or cause of diabetes in some people who have no history of diabetes from their family.

One alternative for people who are suffering from diabetes is to try out diet soft drinks. It is important to note however, that even if a drink is considered “diet”, there may still be some components of sugar that can be harmful to the body of someone who is diabetic.
